As far as i know there's no use at all for them in pre-searing but you could maybe check the weapons dude if he uses them for crafting stuff
Still i would say sell the lot

if you plan on staying in Pre-Searing with that character, then I would say trade em to players who go-on to Post Searing as there is not much use for em where you are now.

Just sell all the junk, you don't need it there. Do check the weapon trader though.

You could always run thru the academy to get to your account storage and deposit them if you have a need for them on another toon. Or have another guildie take them to post for you.

Otherwise sell em.

I tend not to convert items to materials, at least not until Krytia. Anything before then I just sell. Before then, you get a 1 item = 1 material.

Starting with Krytia its 2 for 1 or more. The farther along in the game you get, the better the ratio. Once your at that point, as long as your using the basic salvage kit, selling in groups of 10 at the material trader will make you money.

Check out the Crafter in Ascalon City, he has some decent weapons and other items that require some common materials, but he uses Iron Ingots and Glittering Dust, from what I remember.
